Practice period is derived from a Zen tradition known as ango which translates to "peaceful dwelling". It is a period of intensive and committed practice, with an emphasis on zazen, study and work.

Our upcoming practice period at Mid City Zen is an opportunity for deeper study and practice. It will be a 7 week period beginning with a Day Long retreat and ending with a 3 day retreat led by visiting teacher Ryushin Paul Haller. There will also be a 5 week class series on the Heart Sutra taught by Rev. Michaela.

We are also asking each participant to commit to intensify your practice in whatever way you can. This might mean sitting zazen at home each day, or more study. Visiting Teacher Ryushin Paul Haller will also be available for Dokusan (one-on-one practice discussions) when he is here. Rev. Michaela will serve as the Shuso, or Head Student and will give additional teachings and there will be a final ceremony on November 24 to mark this rite of passage.

We are asking folks to commit to as much of the practice period as you can. Please fill out this application to express your intention and your availability. If you are not able to attend some of the events, please indicate this on the application form:
